Grant-Lee Phillips

Grant-Lee Phillips is an accomplished singer-songwriter and a stand-out of the 90’s Largo music-comedy scene. Am I hyphenating more words than usual because of Grant-Lee’s first-name? Could-be! You might have seen Grant-Lee on Gilmore Girls, heard him in the band Grant Lee Buffalo, or smelled him touring around with Robyn Hitchcock and Margaret Cho. Note: I do not actually know about his odor. I mainly did that to fit a certain sentence structure. Sorry this bio was so meta.

Paul F. Tompkins welcomes all, including those who known the titles of his stand-up comedy albums, to a LIVE episode of Spontaneanation, recorded at the world-famous Largo at The Coronet! This week, Paul’s special guest is singer-songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips! They chat about which existing superhero Grant relates to, being a child magician, and Vincent Price. Paul is then joined by Stephanie Courtney, Colleen Smith, and Gary Anthony Williams to improvise a story set at Knott’s Scary Farm. And as always, Eban (only the best) Schletter scores it all on piano!

Singer-songwriter, fellow podcaster, and father Grant-Lee Phillips takes a break from interviewing musicians on Shortwave to assist Jeff as a co-host on today’s Love, Dad! Jeff discusses feeling disconnected from his daughter, having difficulty factoring in some time for his health, and ways to pare down anxiety. Grant-Lee talks about transitioning his daughter from co-sleeping to her own bedroom, his biggest fear as a dad, not trusting the Supernanny, and giving his daughter a bit of positive reinforcement by experimenting with potty presents. Plus, we hear Grant-Lee’s song to his daughter entitled “Violet.”

Welcome to the very first episode of Shortwave with Grant-Lee Phillips! Gather round as Grant-Lee Phillips welcomes old and new friends each week to share their music. Aimee Mann joins us on our very first episode to discuss her experience contributing her music to the film Magnolia, her thoughts on music piracy, the inspiration behind her new album “Charmer,” and to perform some of her songs live.

At the intersection of comedy, music, and fashion lies this week’s Comedy Bang Bang. Margaret Cho and Grant-Lee Phillips provide the score for the episode in addition to delighting us with tales of the 90s and fun rounds of What Am I Thinking? and Would You Rather?! David Wain is the comedy legend you’d expect him to be, but by the end of the episode you’ll be in awe of his keyboard skills. Dov Charney came here to talk about American Apparel and he does. That part is pretty straightforward. But throw it all together and you have a podcast stew to whet your pre-Thanksgiving appetite. Speaking of stew, head over to the Earwolf store and pick up The Complete Comedy Bang Bang Christmas Collection. All proceeds go to the LA Regional Food Bank.
