[00:01:30] “A disgruntled nerd who has been bullied in high school, creates Buzz Cola, a soft drink that turns surfers into zombies.”

[00:01:39] Wait to fucking go IMDB. That’s not a description, that’s a straight up spoiler.

[00:01:47] And it actually simplifies how complex this movie is. It’s not just about that. It’s about so many things. So many things. And, um, you know, Surf Two, there is no Surf One, there is no Surf Three. But they did have a sense of humor about it because the tagline for this film was the end of a trilogy. So I do like that.

[00:02:18] Yes. This movie was really like in development hell, after it was shot, like multiple recuts had to be done. They had to add a lot of boobs to like make it releasable, which is a crazy thing to say, uh, but also explains why the boobs are so segmented in the film. It’s like, hmm, odd. Uh, so we will break all of this down, but before I can do that, I must introduce to you my co-host.

[00:03:52] Paul Scheer: It always, always happens to me when I watch a movie like this. The nudity comes on at the most inappropriate time. I was caught with the nudity full, full nudity going on while getting like a drink from the, the, the stewardess. So good and flight attendant. And uh, and also the guy who was sleeping next to me woke up so that.

[00:07:40] Jessica St. Clair: All the boobs. Yeah, all the boobs are coming.

[00:07:43] Jason Mantzoukas: Oh.

[00:07:44] Jessica St. Clair: And I just was like.

[00:07:45] Jason Mantzoukas: All the boobs are coming.

[00:07:46] Jessica St. Clair: All the boobs are out. So that’s all, that’s weird. And then, and so the guys were clocking at like, what the fuck is going on at 7:00 AM?

[00:07:53] Jason Mantzoukas: Which can you imagine St. Clair sits down in your plane and it starts just like, fires up hard nudity. Truly, that’s what it was.

[00:08:02] Paul Scheer: 7:00 AM. Gotta watch it.

[00:08:04] Jason Mantzoukas: There are, there are boobs every 15 minutes in this movie, like clockwork. And honestly, it should be a law.

[00:08:13] Jessica St. Clair: Yes. So I’m, I’m watching it. I’m in a little matching sweatsuit, you know, I’m watching all these boobs and then it got to that scene and I was like, (gagging noises).

[00:08:25] Jason Mantzoukas: I would’ve loved it if you barfed on the plane from me.

[00:08:27] Jessica St. Clair: I literally almost did. Anyway.

[00:08:29] Paul Scheer: Well, you know where, you know where I was already upset this movie. Look, every 15 minutes there’s boobs and there’s also every 15 minutes, there’s a very long surfing scene.

[00:08:38] Jason Mantzoukas: Loved it.

[00:08:40] Jessica St. Clair: I love that. I loved that.

[00:08:41] Jason Mantzoukas: It, it seems, I would, I would believe it if it was all B-roll that they’d purchased from a surf house.

[00:08:46] Jessica St. Clair: I think it was.

[00:08:46] Paul Scheer: Definitely, definitely because they.

[00:08:48] Jason Mantzoukas: But also they’ve got like real songs. They’ve got like the Beach Boys.

[00:08:52] Jessica St. Clair: How do they afford that?

[00:08:53] Jason Mantzoukas: They’ve got real versions of these songs. Not just the Beach Boys, except for The Chariots of Fire, frog Race, which is very much a sound alike, but beautifully done.

[00:09:03] Jessica St. Clair: Beautifully shot.

[00:09:05] Jason Mantzoukas: Gorgeous. This movie, let me be clear, is top to bottom, T two B. Fucking great.

[00:09:12] Paul Scheer: I was very nervous by the poster. I was like, oh, okay. This is gonna be a gross out movie. And I was like, no. This is a movie about teens falling in love, falling outta love. Finding purpose and fighting against the law. Community. You know, it was a, it was, it was about activism, this movie.

[00:09:32] Jessica St. Clair: Dunno, I dunno about that. Um.

[00:09:37] Jason Mantzoukas: It was about the horrors of soda and what soda can do to our insides.

[00:09:42] Paul Scheer: And how parents just don’t understand.

[00:09:45] Jason Mantzoukas: Yep.

[00:09:45] Jessica St. Clair: True.

[00:09:45] Paul Scheer: Um, where I got nauseous and I had to rewind it was.

[00:09:49] Jason Mantzoukas: Because you wanted to get nauseous again?

[00:09:50] Jessica St. Clair: Did anybody else, can I just ask show of hands who actually felt physically ill watching this film?

[00:09:55] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:09:55] Jessica St. Clair: So many.

[00:09:56] Jason Mantzoukas: Yes.

[00:10:00] Paul Scheer: The, what was going on, and I found out later, I believe, but when they showed that closeup of a person’s foot and it had those giant knots and then later we heard about knee knots and I was like, Ooh.

[00:10:12] Jason Mantzoukas: No, I think it was glued. Don’t you mean when they were glued to the surfboard?

[00:10:15] Paul Scheer: No, no. This is in the opening sequence.

[00:10:17] Jason Mantzoukas: I’m sorry.

[00:10:18] Paul Scheer: They just show a foot with like, it looks like just big cysts.

[00:10:23] Jessica St. Clair: Yeah.

[00:10:23] Paul Scheer: Like giant cysts and that like, and it was like, oh, they clearly ran out of like the usable surf footage and they’re like, here’s some B roll of surfers of terrible injuries. Because they also show another guy like getting outta the water, like fixing his crotch. Like.

[00:10:38] Jessica St. Clair: Yes, that’s true.

[00:10:39] Paul Scheer: Pulling the suit down. I’m like, this is not funny. Just looks like he’s uncomfortable. But then we, we get to the school and the, what I love about this movie is it immediately makes no sense because the kids are trying to leave school and they’re told, well, it’s the weekend.

[00:10:59] Jessica St. Clair: That’s right.

[00:10:59] Paul Scheer: Like they can’t leave school on the weekend. Um, but uh, when, when the first guy, I don’t even know his name is, maybe it’s, I don’t know. Uh, when he tries to eat through the fence.

[00:11:10] Jessica St. Clair: Mr. Big Head.

[00:11:11] Paul Scheer: Okay, yes.

[00:11:12] Jason Mantzoukas: This guy’s

[00:11:13] Jessica St. Clair: Mr. Big Head.

[00:11:13] Jason Mantzoukas: A goddamn legend.

[00:11:15] Jessica St. Clair: Yes, he is.

[00:11:16] Jason Mantzoukas: They clearly, they clearly got him riled up as to like you are Belushi in Animal House.

[00:11:23] Jason Mantzoukas: You are our movie’s Belushi. Right? So every scene you are in, you just demolish everything.

[00:11:29] Jessica St. Clair: And he did.

[00:11:29] Jason Mantzoukas: And he straight up does now. But what’s interesting is in this opening scene, he bites through a chain link fence.

[00:11:34] Jessica St. Clair: That’s right.

[00:11:36] Jason Mantzoukas: What we later see is that one of the things that happens when the kids are, spoiler alert, turned into vampires. No, no. Zombies, zombie zombies. Zombies. But they are zombies that like ingest acid and metal. And so they already, so he has the skill.

[00:11:52] Jessica St. Clair: That’s interesting.

[00:11:53] Jason Mantzoukas: He already has the skillset that the zombie kids have. But he is never had a Buzz Cola.

[00:11:59] Jessica St. Clair: No.

[00:11:59] Jason Mantzoukas: This kid has a 53 iq they say at one point.

[00:12:04] Jessica St. Clair: And he said he cheated because he cheated.

[00:12:07] Jason Mantzoukas: I wish the movie had been about him. Full stop.

[00:12:28] Jason Mantzoukas: Here’s the thing, when that happened, and I can’t guarantee this is true because my memory is porous.

[00:12:35] Jason Mantzoukas: When that happened, I had a vivid memory of seeing this movie when I was a kid.

[00:12:41] Jessica St. Clair: I’m sure you did. I’m sure we all saw it.

[00:12:43] Jason Mantzoukas: It was playing. Older kids were playing it at like a thing that was like families got together and kids had rented a movie in the back, but the older kids had rented a movie and so I was sitting there and there was boobs in the movie.

[00:12:56] I remember that. But I vividly remember chainsawing the roof off the car. And then my parents coming in when there was like nudity and being like, wait, what’s going on back here?

[00:13:05] Jessica St. Clair: That’s the eighties.

[00:13:06] Jason Mantzoukas: Come on. We’re, we’re, we’re, we’re going. Let’s, let’s get outta here. And I feel like this movie was powerfully important to me as a child.

[00:13:14] Jason Mantzoukas: It’s almost been almost as if it’s informed certain things that have become very important to me.

[00:13:24] Jason Mantzoukas: I suspect so, because although I, I don’t were, I think they were more upset because they were fine with it if it was like, if I’d been like, can we watch this?
