Together they discuss how we have historically exaggerated the harmful effects of drugs on the brain, how stigma and criminalization create greater adverse effects than the drugs themselves, and more. Dr. Hart’s new book, Drug Use for Grown Ups, is out now.

In December 2020, the UK High Court determined that trans, non-binary, and gender diverse young people in the UK must have legal approval before they can start puberty blockers—even if these young people, their families, and their doctors advocate for treatment. This week on Getting Curious, Lui Asquith joins Jonathan to break down what hormone blockers are, why this case is so significant, and how it fits into a broader discussion about trans rights in the UK and beyond.

 

Lui Asquith (pronouns they/them) is Director of Legal, Policy and Operations at Mermaids. Lui is a qualified lawyer, with a background in LGBTI activism. They moved to Mermaids over two years ago to focus on improving the lives of trans, non-binary and gender diverse young people on the front line. Founded in 1995, Mermaids is a UK-wide charity working to support thousands of transgender, non-binary and gender diverse children, young people, and their families.

Chris is a down-to-earth and refreshing woman. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri and grew up on her family’s dairy farm. Chris was one of 7 children who were given their very own cow to raise and care for, eventually becoming 9-10 head of cattle to oversee. Chris was involved in band, pep squad, track, and 4-H in high school. Today, she is an accountant and credits her parents for the financial responsibilities they gave her on the dairy farm as a young girl. As a Mom, Chris shared her love of reading with her three sons. One of her favorite memories with her youngest son, Brooks, was standing out in the middle of their two-acre family home looking through a telescope waiting for a magnificent meteor shower…whispering to each other. Brooks is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor who has been featured on Seth Meyers, Conan, SNL, GIRLS and AP Bio. He hosts his own podcast called Entry Level.
